Storing sweets: packaging, containers and best-before dates

The most useful storage advice is on your packaging. It contains the information for that particular variety: the date and any storage instructions. Keep this information even if you transfer the sweets to another container.

Keep the packaging information with the product

If you have several varieties at home, you can keep each label with its container or take a clear, readable photo of it. That way, the product name, ingredients, allergens and date can still be matched to the right sweets.

Do not simply add new sweets to older leftovers if you will no longer be able to tell which information belongs to which batch. Keeping them in two separate packs makes things easier to track.

Seal the pack carefully after opening

Close the jar or pouch carefully after enjoying your sweets. If you transfer them, use a clean, dry container and continue to follow the storage instructions on the original packaging. If it gives specific instructions for storage after opening, those take priority.

Whether a particular variety belongs in the fridge, or how long it can be kept after opening, cannot be answered in the same way for all sweets. Follow the information for your product.

What does ‘best before’ mean?

The best-before date indicates how long a food will retain its quality, such as its flavour and texture, when stored correctly. It is not the same as a use-by date. The Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office also explains this distinction.

A date in the shop, on a product photo or on another pack does not replace the date on your own packaging. A single shelf life for the whole range would therefore not be very helpful.

Is some information missing?

Send us the product name and a photo of the packaging if information is missing or unreadable. The printed date and batch number, if available, will also help us identify the product.
